After graduating from an Bachelor of Music program (Boston University, 1963) However, following that I was experiencing the liberal arts in my teaching career (Brown University, 1971-75) and a believer in education that integrates studying the arts along with studies in many different subjects. It's not unusual for an ethnomusicologist (MA 1967, PhD at UCLA)! There is no surprise that the department of ethnomusicology of UC Berkeley, where I was a professor from 1975-1976 is part of the College of Letters and Science's department of music. It's fun to pursue several passions. Also, I like looking at the bigger overall picture. Graduate students and undergraduates (for whom I wrote three textbooks: Music in India, The Classical Traditions of India, Thinking Musically: Music in Japan - Experiencing Music - Expressing Cultural Expression) I enjoy teaching. There are times when I am pursuing primarily academic activities with periods when I add administrative responsibilities to the mix (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-98, Chair all the Deans at the College of Letters and Science 1994-1998, Chairperson of the Group on Asian Studies Since 1999, and now as Chair of the Department of Music again).
